FOREIGN tourists spending on shopping may for the first time this year overtake accommodation as the number one revenue item. If they spend even a similar percentage as they did in 2011, shopping revenue from tourists could clock in RM18 billion of the total RM60 billion foreign exchange receipt targeted for the year. In the past decade, tourists spending trend in Malaysia has been unusual. While most countries see tourists spend more on shopping than on accommodation, in Malaysia it has been the opposite. That too, when Malaysia is said have one of the lowest, if not the lowest, average room rates in the world. However, things could change this year. Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Ng Yen Yen last week said that tourists may fork out more for shopping this year compared with what they would spend for their stay. Higher spending on retail is supported by abolishment of duties on a wider category of products. If spending patterns can be used as a barometer to gauge Malaysia's standing as an international shopping destination, Malaysia could verywell be strengthening its position as a shopping haven. It was 12 years ago that Malaysia kicked off the Mega Sale Carnival to establish itself as a shopping haven. In 2011, tourists spent 30.8 per cent of their money on accommodation and 30 per cent on shopping, representing RM17.96 billion and RM17.49 billion, respectively. In 2010, the ratio was 29.7 per cent on hotels and 29.1 per cent on retail, or RM16.78 billion and RM16.44 billion. This compared to 2000 when 30.3 per cent of foreign exchange went into accommodation and only 24 per cent went into retail. Meanwhile, Malaysia Retailer Association (MRA) president Eddy Chan said: "We are hopeful that shopping will overtake accommodation. It is good that tourists are spending more on shopping". However, Chan cautioned that the contribution from shopping may have been influenced by inflation as prices of goods have gone up. "Nevertheless, it is a good sign," he said. Unlike accommodation, the shopping component of tourism is something that can grow. There is a limit to how much tourists are willing to spend or are likely to spend on accommodation as room rates are fixed, but it is not the same for shopping. In some countries, the shopping component is 50 per cent of total tourist spend.

Gamuda in line to bag key MRT tunnelling, says M

MandA Securities said Gamuda, together with its consortium partner MMC, is likely to bag three lucrative tunnelling packages of the project, dubbed MRT 1, MRT 2 and MRT 3 by the securities firm. Gamuda is also in line to win the Gemas Johor Baru double-tracking rail project as the Swiss tender process gives advantage to local contractors. Other than the MRT 1 tunnelling package worth around RM8 billion in a joint venture with MMC which Gamuda may likely secure, we believe that there are hosts of other MRT and railway-related contracts which Gamuda may likely secure with its partners. This is in particular related to the MRT tunnel l ing por t ions because Gamuda-MMC are the only local contractors with strong local and international tunnelling experience, MandA said in a report. The firm explained that the Swiss bidding tender method for the MRT contracts actually gives Gamuda an advantage because it can outbid the international contractors. As a local contractor, it has obvious cost advantages in raw materials, sourcing of heavy equipment and manpower costs over foreign contractors, which would not be able to challenge local contractors in that aspect unless they partner with a giant local contractor. The MRT 1 tunnelling contract is expected to be awarded soon. Business Times recently reported that MMCGamuda is likely the frontrunner for the job after submitting the lowest bid. MandA said the MRT 2 and MRT 3 tunnelling portions are likely to be tendered out in 2013. Our very rough estimates for the MRT 2 and MRT 3 tunnelling packages are likely to cost around RM6.4 billion and RM5.6 billion, respectively, it added. The firm, however, questioned whether the government has the political will to award the MRT 2 and MRT 3 packages as well to the Gamuda-MMC consortium on top of the MRT job 1. An indication would be if the Gamuda-MMC consortium is pre-qualified to tender for the MRT 2 and MRT 3 packages in 2013. If they are pre-qualified, then they stand a good chance. This is similar to the Gemas-JB electrified double-tracking project. The Gamuda-MMC had already won the mammoth RM12.45 billion Ipoh-Padang Besar electrified double-tracking project in 2008. MandA said Gamuda and its partners, China Railway and Bridge Corp, have a strong chance to secure the Gemas-JB double-tracking project, which may be worth up to RM8 billion. If based on experience alone, the Gamuda-CRBC consortium has a leg up, it noted. MandA has maintained its buy call on Gamuda with a revised fair value of RM4.47. Its valuation has not included the MRT 1 tunnelling portion, which it thinks the Gamuda-MMC consortium is going to bag.

The developer and operator of Bukit Gambang Resort City (BGRC) received a total of 6,829 applications for 127.2 million shares with a total value of RM108.1 million. Sentoria is set to become Bursa Malaysia's first listing this year when it makes its debut on February 23. Under its IPO, the company is making a public issue of 60 million new shares and an offer-for-sale of 40 million promoters' shares. Of the 60 million shares, 20 million were allocated for public balloting, 10 million for its eligible directors, employees and business associates at 85 sen each, and 30 million for private placement at 87 sen each. The 40 million promoters' shares, allocated for Bumiputera investors approved by the International Trade and Industry Ministry, were priced at RM0.87 per share. For the financial year ended September 2010, Sentoria's revenue grew 34.8 per cent to RM123.2 million, up from RM91.3 million previously. Its net profit rose 44.2 per cent to RM19.2 million from RM13.3 million previously. BGRC is one of the largest integrated resort cities in Malaysia with 221ha land area. It offers multiple attractions in a single location. These include Bukit Gambang Water Park and Active Academy, as well as MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions) facilities.

The stock opened at 56 sen but nosedived to 37.5 sen at the end of the morning session. The stock bounced back after trading resumed in the afternoon but still closed 14 per cent lower to 48 sen. Naim Indah's shares have been on the uptrend since February 2 this year and continued to rise after Sagajuta Group's Datuk Raymond Chan Boon Siew emerged as a new major shareholder last week. Chan bought a 12.11 per cent stake in Naim Indah from the company's largest shareholder Crest Energy Sdn Bhd, which also sold the remainder of its 22.80 per cent stake to a number of other individuals. He was reportedly said to be planning to inject property developer Sagajuta Sabah Sdn Bhd into Naim Indah. Last Thursday, Naim Indah closed at 67 sen from just 9 sen a week before. Overall, the stock had risen some 1,240 per cent within a six-month period until last Thursday. The sharp rise has prompted Bursa Malaysia to caution investors in the trading of Naim Indah stocks. The move raised concerns that the regulator could move to designate the stock and selling pressure has since intensified.

PT Inovisi buys into Nextnation

KUALA LUMPUR: Mobile applications and platform provider Nextnation Communication Bhd says Indonesia's PT Inovisi Infracom Tbk has bought a 10 per cent stake in it via a private placement. Inovisi has an option to raise the stake to 30 per cent, Nextnation said yesterday. Group chief executive officer Larry Tey said the acquisition showed a strong vote of confidence from Inovisi in the company. Nextnation recently secured an outsourcing project from Inovisi, whose market capitalisation of RM5.2 billion is 100 times more than the former's. The company will provide mobile platform infrastructure hosting and maintenance services to Inovisi. The project would guarantee Nextnation a minimum revenue of RM67.5 million over three years, with a 31 per cent profit margin, Tey said. The placement shares to Inovisi would allow Nextnation to secure a portion of a US$5 million (RM15.24 million) capital expenditure needed to undertake the outsourcing project, he added.

SAPURACREST Kencana Petroleum Bhd, the merged entity between Malaysia's two largest oil and gas (OandG) players by assets, is on track to make its debut on the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia by middle of next month. SapuraCrest Kencana is the amalgamation of SapuraCrest Petroleum Bhd and Kencana Petroleum Bhd which had received shareholders' nod to marry in their respective extraordinary general meetings last December. SapuraCrest executive vice-chairman and president Datuk Seri Shahril Shamsuddin said SapuraCrest Kencana is on track for listing and currently, the firm is going through the administrative process to resolve shareholders issues such as capital reduction, prospectus launch and complying with the court order. "For now, it is business as usual and we will continue to make a profit before we can announce any dividend policies, contract value or new bids," Shahril told reporters at a press conference on the Sapura and Kencana Red Ribbon GP Ball 2012, to be held on March 22 in conjunction with the Sepang Formula One race, here yesterday. SapuraCrest and Kencana are the title sponsor and Richard Mille is the co-sponsor of the event. Kencana chief executive officer Datuk Mokhzani Mahathir said the new entity will reward shareholders the way SapuraCrest and Kencana have been doing before, although no dividend policy has been planned yet. SapuraCrest and Kencana are merging to become among the world's top five players to rank alongside global OandG giants such as Italy's Saipem, France's Technip and the US McDermott's International Inc. The RM11.85 billion merger deal will create Malaysia's largest integrated OandG service provider by assets. Under their cash and share swap deal, special purpose vehicle Integral Key Sdn Bhd will buy all the assets and liabilities of SapuraCrest for RM5.87 billion and Kencana for RM5.98 billion. Prior to the merger, SapuraCrest and Kencana will be delisted followed by the listing of the merged company SapuraCrest Kencana. Shahril and Mokhzani will become group president/chief executive officer and executive vice-chairman of SapuraCrest Kencana respectively. Datuk Hamzah Bakar, the current SapuraCrest chairman, will be nominated group chairman. The enlarged entity will be able to serve its more than 20 clients of mostly oil majors in a better manner as it will now have more than 500 vendors under its wings. Shahril declined to reveal the value of its current bids, but in past news reports he had said that the merged entity is eyeing more international projects, especially in Australia and Brazil, to boost its already fat order book of RM13 billion.

MICG proposes integritypacts to reduce abuse

THE Malaysian Institute of Corporate Governance (MICG) has proposed that public and private enterprises sign integrity pacts in business contract documentation. According to MICG president Tan Sri Megat Najmuddin Khas, this will reduce abuse of authority in the procurement process. "This can be a powerful tool to curb abuse and corruption as any breach of such terms will lead to a termination of the contract," he said at the The National Forum On Procurement yesterday. MICG also urges the government to put a stop to all unscrupulous practices in its procurement process as such practices are wasting public funds. "We cannot go on like this. The country cannot afford it," Megat Najmuddin said. He said the government cannot forever depend on national oil corporation Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) to fund development projects and various types of subsidies. "Petronas money or its business is not going to be there forever because oil and gas are depleting assets. We have to manage it properly," said Megat Najmuddin, who also sits on the Petronas board. He noted that the public must seriously be aware that procurement expenditure is disbursement of public funds. "The national budget in Malaysia for 2012 is RM232.8 billion. Of this, RM181.6 billion is for management and RM51.2 billion is for development," he pointed out. In the last few years, he said there has been a lot of talks about transparency in the government administration, including procurement. "Transparency is an important feature in corporate governance and should be practised freely. Nevertheless, there can be some exceptions to the rule which invoke national security and national integrity," he said. Meanwhile, auditor-general Tan Sri Datuk Setia Ambrin Buang reiterated that integrity and transparency in government procurement must be enhanced to transform and restore public confidence. He noted that the e-Procurement system and e-bidding could contribute towards greater transparency and integrity in government procurement. Since the e-Procurement started in 2000, about 4.3 million transactions amounting to RM63.7 billion were transacted online until 2011. "This system was utilised by 68 per cent out of the over 110,000 registered vendors with the Ministry of Finance," he said. E-bidding or competitive bidding has proven to be an effective tool because of the significant cost-savings to the government. "Where possible it should be the most preferred means of procurement," he opined. He lauded the government's proposal to establish a certified training course for procurement officers, which would help in enhancing integrity and transparency in the public procurement.

KUALA LUMPUR: The growing interests from Chinese investors in Malaysian properties has prompted Mah Sing Group Bhd to open a representative office in Shanghai to feature its residential and commercial properties. DPMM to build houses again

MALAY Chamber of Commerce Malaysia (DPMM) will again embark on a role as property developer, offering medium- and low-cost terrace houses and apartments at cost price. Its president Syed Ali Alattas said the properties will be priced less than RM200,000 a unit. "We were involved as developer in 1975 when our subsidiary Syarikat (Perumahan) Sdn Bhd built 1,340 low medium cost houses in Johor Baru. We sold those houses at cost price, which was not more than RM34,000 a unit then," he told reporters at the DPMM headquarters, yesterday. Syed Ali said that the chamber intends to collaborate with the various state governments for the housing projects and believes this time around it will also be able to sell the units at almost cost price. "We will be writing letters to all the Mentris Besar soon to ask them to allocate us land for this purpose," he said. He said the chamber plans to build 100,000 houses throughout Malaysia including Sabah and Sarawak of which 30 per cent can be acquired by non-Bumiputeras. He said a website will soon be up, providing more information on the type of properties the chambers would be selling. DPMM will build the properties under a new subsidiary called Dewan Syarikah Bhd and will start with a project in Johor. "We are looking at building 220 apartment units in Bandar Uda Utama and believe we can complete the project within eight months," he said. Syed Ali added that it will carry out a design contest for both the terrace houses and apartments which offers a cash prize of RM15,000 for the winner of the low cost apartment category and RM10,000 for the double-storey terrace house category. He said the chamber will not be seeking the participation of non-members in the project as its members include 16,000 contractors, 2,000 engineers and 10,000 consultants. "We've had enough of listening to grouses about sky rocketing house prices ... that is why we are embarking on this project," he added.

Formerly AIM's Wealth Creation CEO, Rozario succeeds Datuk Dr Kamal Jit Singh, who has been made CEO of Unit Inovasi Khas (UNIK). In a statement, Kamal said within its eight months of existence, AIM progressed from creating innovation in the country and initiating projects, to actually implementing them. KOTA KINABALU: Sabah's external trade saw a 15 per cent growth to RM82.4 billion in 2011 from RM71.5 billion recorded the previous year, following increases in both exports and imports. "In 2011, total exports increased to RM49.6 billion from RM43.6 billion previously, while imports rose to RM32.8 billion from RM27.9 billion in 2010," State Industrial Deve-lopment Minister Datuk Raymond Tan Shu Kiah said when officia-ting a Small and Medium Enter-prises (SMEs) seminar here, yesterday. Tan's speech was read out by his representative, Industrial Development and Research Department director Patrick Tan. He said despite this, exporting has been made more challenging due to the weak demand in the US and the economic problems in Europe, coupled with intense competition from newly developing countries. In view of that, Tan said, SMEs which are the backbone of the coun-try's economy, must be prepared for challenges ahead as Malaysia begins its transforma-tion towards a high-income economy. "It is important for our SMEs to review their strategies, upgrade the skills of their workers, adopt new technology to produce higher quality products in less time and start exploring further into untapped or emerging markets," he added. He said SMEs from Sabah who did well after being "adopted" by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) under one of its programmes, was because of their willingness to progress themselves. "They proved to the government that they have the capabilities and abilities to improve and more importantly, their willingness to strive to a higher level. "Success is not just waiting for government help alone," he reminded. Meanwhile, Federation of Sabah Manufacturers (FSM) president Datuk Seri Wong Khen Thau reiterated FSM's idea that Sabah be transformed into a hub for the Far East as it commands the ideal geographical location for trade in this region. THE Netherlands remains supportive of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) with its renewed approval of the biofuel certification scheme, or RSPO-RED. Secretary general of the RSPO Darrel Webber said the Netherlands, through Dutch Emissions Authority, is one of the largest importers of Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (CSPO) in Europe and makes up a significant number of RSPO member companies across a variety of sectors. "We are glad that the Dutch Emissions Authority has decided to extend the approval of the RSPO-RED certification scheme. "The move by regulators sends a very positive signal to responsible producers and suppliers about the demand for their investments in CSPO," he said. Meanwhile, Global Sustainability Adviser at Sime Darby and RSPO executive board member Puvan Selvanathan said the RSPO certification is unique in a way that it takes into account not only good agricultural practices but also responsible social and environmental management. "The continued support for RSPO by the Dutch government is a clear sign we are moving in the right direction to make sustainable palm oil the norm," he said. However, the Dutch government has accepted the RSPO-RED scheme on a temporary basis, which is until July 1 this year. This is due to the scheme currently being reviewed by the European Commission for an approval at the European level, as required by the Renewable Energy Directive passed in 2009. Under the directive, the European Union (EU) has set the goal of reaching a 10 per cent share of renewable energy in the transport sector of every member state by 2020. The directive aims to ensure that the EU uses only sustainable biofuels, which generates clear and net greenhouse gas emissions savings and have no negative impact on biodiversity and land use.

Taiwan's Chunghwa System sees Malaysia as key market

KUALA LUMPUR: Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom Group's wholly-owned unit Chunghwa System Integration Co Ltd hopes its green solutions for homes and businesses will capture 200 customers by year-end. The goal, which will be achieved via its local partner Dawn System Integration Sdn Bhd, is seen as a realistic target. "So far, we have received encouraging response from the market. We have gotten a significant amount of inquiries and cases. "By the end of next month, we hope to have the energy-saving system installed in a factory," Dawn System managing director Joseph Lee said in an interview yesterday. The factory, located in Batu Pahat, Johor, could be its first Malaysian customer if the deal goes as planned. Chunghwa System chairman and CEO Liang Lung-Sing said Malaysia is a key market for the group. He expects its solutions to be well-received by the Malaysian market. "Our solutions can help customers save a significant amount of electricity. While the actual savings is on a case-by-case basis, based on our past records, we see our customers achieving savings of about 30 per cent on an average," Liang added. The system allows users to monitor their electricity usage, and enables them to find out which particular room, or floors, or section of a building, is using too much electricity. It warns if electricity usage crosses a certain threshold set by the users. "It's a very smart system. More importantly, it works well with all brands of electrical products like air-conditioners," said Liang. Lee said the company is in talks with several parties. Its target audience for include property developers, property owners, designers, hotels, office building, factories and more. "We will be talking to Telekom Malaysia Bhd soon, and we are also negotiating with a hotel chain," Lee said.

LABOUR-intensive industries must shed their traditional dependency on labour and focus on alternative production inputs that can boost productivity, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said yesterday. The construction industry, for one, must move towards greater mechanisation and automation driven by ICT which can both increase productivity and reduce labour dependency, he said. Najib said the government, through the Works Ministry, is prepared to look at factors that could inhibit the adoption of mechanisation in this industry and put in place policies and regulatory framework to remedy the situation. "I am told that the construction industry has the highest incidents of wastage," he said, adding that combining mechanisation and ICT will help cut wastage. With the combination, it is possible to plan and visualise product requirements and undertake production processes by assembling components to reduce wastage and it can even promote mass-customisation. Najib said this in his opening address at the International Construction Week (ICW) 2012 here yesterday. He noted that such requirements are expected from the construction industry to meet the challenges of the new economic model and the government's economic transformation agenda. "ICT will also allow our construction professionals to provide global services even while operating from Malaysia. Again this reduces cost ...," he said. The premier also urged the industry to go green as the value created by a green economy is diverse - from the supply chain to the professionals, from raw material extraction to utility generation and product development. "The value of going green is immense while the cost of neglect is unimaginable." He noted that the construction is the key sector in the Malaysian economy and despite the global economic uncertainties, the industry is expected to grow at 7 per cent this year. The ICW 2012 is a four-day event comprising conferences, seminars and exhibitions participated by more than 37 local and foreign construction experts and practitioners. AMMB Q3 net profit in line with expectations

KUALA LUMPUR: AMMB Holdings Bhd, the country's sixth largest banking group by assets, saw third-quarter net profit grow by a tenth to RM372.7 million, in line with analysts' expectations. The improvement, over RM338.4 million in the same quarter a year ago, came on the back of higher non-interest income and lower provisions. Revenue grew by 7.2 per cent to RM1.9 billion. "It's in line with our expectations, and consensus," said Keith Wee, a banking analyst at OSK Research, which expects the group to turn in a full-year net profit of RM1.5 billion. AMMB's net profit for the nine months to date stood at RM1.2 billion, up 13.7 per cent from a year ago. It accounted for about 77 per cent of a consensus net profit forecast for the full year to March 31, 2012. Group managing director Cheah Tek Kuang said AMMB remains cautious about its near-term outlook and plans to stay disciplined amid persistent global headwinds. "We remain focused on loans growth targeting profitable and viable segments, accelerating deposits growth - especially low-cost deposits - and expanding non-interest income," he said in a press release issued here yesterday. Banks in Malaysia are increasingly looking at expanding non-interest income and fees as competition in the lending business grows stiffer and cuts into margins. AMMB's non-interest income accounted for 36 per cent of total income in the nine months to date, compared with 22 per cent three years ago. Gross loans grew by 5.5 per cent to RM74.9 billion in the nine months. Loans for household transport vehicles accounted for 31 per cent of total loans, while loans for residential properties, 16.3 per cent. Cheah said the group is in the midst of a due diligence to buy a local general insurance company with its strategic partner, Insurance Australia Group. It had in December last year applied for central bank approval to buy Kurnia Insurans Bhd. It also anticipates new growth opportunities from leveraging on its biggest shareholder, Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Ltd (ANZ). AMMB, which is 23.8 per cent-owned by ANZ, has access to ANZ's regional distribution platform across 27 countries. "Our international connectivity agenda has continued to gain good momentum. Notable initiatives include the collaboration with ANZ to develop our foreign exchange,interest rate and commodities derivatives business," Cheah said. AMMB, the listed entity of AmBank Group, saw its shares close one sen higher to RM6.12 in the stock market. OSK Research has maintained its "neutral" call and RM6.20 target price on the stock.

'Cheaper to own cars in Malaysia'

COST of vehicle ownership (CVO) in Malaysia is still among the most competitive in the Asean region due to the subsidised petrol prices, cheaper road tax and insurance premium. Malaysia Automotive Institute (MAI) chief executive officer Madani Sahari said passenger cars prices in Malaysia had always been perceived to be higher than in other Asean countries. "Undeniably, at first glance of the sales prices comparisons of popular models, the claim appeared to be true, except when compared to prices in Singapore," he said. Madani said in a non-subsidised petrol scenario, Malaysia's CVO would rank third compared with its Asean counterparts and still largely cheaper than Thailand and slightly less than in Indonesia. The CVO is based on the purchase price of the car and its running cost, inclusive of registration fee, insurance premium, road tax and petrol cost should be computed for a predetermined period for the car to be driven by the individual. Malaysia has the second lowest CVO after the Philippines, mainly due to its cheaper petrol and a relatively lower annual road tax and insurance premium. "Compared with Thailand and Indonesia, the CVO in Malaysia is lower by 39 per cent and 12 per cent, respectively," he said. Most critical is the cost of petrol in running a vehicle, whereby Malaysia has the lowest petrol price due to it being subsidised. Thailand has the highest petrol price, followed by Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines. It is worth noting that Malaysia imposes the lowest road tax and registration fees among Asean countries, parallel to that of the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. Singapore and Indonesia currently have much higher yearly road tax and registration fees, amounting to 577 per cent and 442 per cent more to that of Malaysia. Meanwhile, the annual insurance premiums of vehicles in Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam are among the lowest in the region. In Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia, it is much higher compared to Malaysia in the order of 210 per cent, 175 per cent and 126 per cent, respectively. Madani said the price of a Honda City and Toyota Vios of the 1,500cc segment sold in Thailand is the cheapest in Asean, lower by 40 per cent on average to the sales price in Malaysia. "Similarly, the prices of these two marques in the Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam are also lower by 32 per cent, two per cent and 1.8 per cent on average, respectively," he said. The prices of the popular models are highest in Singapore, citing the Toyota and Honda models, which are higher by an average of 137 per cent compared with Malaysia.

KUALA LUMPUR: It is still too early to say whether the planned listing of Felda Global Ventures Holdings Bhd, slated for May 10, will excite the market, analysts say, due to lack of additional investors information and a deluge of plantation companies already listed on Bursa Malaysia. OSK Research analysts Alvin Tai said investors are still unsure because when it comes to plantation stocks, the market is already full of sizeable plantation companies to choose from. "Plus, we have no idea what Felda Global is putting inside the listed vehicle, like how many shares, its valuation and land size. It's too early to see whether Felda Global will invigorate the market," Tai told Business Times in a phone interview yesterday. Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Ahmad Maslan announced yesterday that Felda Global, the commercial arm of the Federal Land Development Authority, is due to float its shares on the Main Market on May 10 and will rank among the local bourse's top 20 companies upon listing. Felda Global will have an initial market capitalisation of RM21 billion, well above its current value of RM3 billion. It will also be the biggest initial public offering (IPO) so far this year. An analyst at a foreign research house said the market would like to know more about the IPO such as how many shares it will offer, its valuation and price-earnings ratio. "We would want these information so that we can stack it up against other plantation companies such as Sime Darby Bhd, IOI Corp Bhd and Kuala Lumpur Kepong Bhd. "This would allow investors to gauge on their investments and returns," the analyst, who declined to be named, told Business Times in a phone interview yesterday. The analyst added that investors want to gauge what they can get from their investments before putting in their money. Another analyst said Felda Global's market capitalisation value will depend on the percentage it wants to float. HONG KONG: An Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund is exploring the sale of its US$1.30 billion (RM3.97 billion) stake in Malaysian lender RHB Capital Bhd (RHBCap) six months after buying the shares, sources familiar with the matter said, and has engaged in early talks with Japan's Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp (SMBC). Aabar Investments' 25 per cent holding in RHB has dropped in value by about a third since it bought the stake for US$1.9 billion (RM5.8 billion) last year from Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank PJSC. Sources say Aabar has sounded out potential buyers of the stake, including SMBC. The sources said talks with SMBC were preliminary and it was unclear whether the discussions would lead to a transaction. A separate source close to SMBC said the Japanese bank was currently not very keen on buying the stake. Repeated calls to Aabar chief executive Mohamed al-Husseiny were not returned. An SMBC spokesman declined comment. RHB Group managing director Kellee Kam said he could not comment on the matter. Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ACDC) paid US$1.23 billion (RM3.75 billion) for the stake in 2008 and sold it to Aabar in June of last year after a competitive auction that involved several suitors. After attracting several interested bidders, the stake was sold to Aabar. Aabar paid RM10.80 per share, or about 2.25 times RHB's book value, far more than the valuation commanded by some other Malaysian lenders at the time. Malaysia's strong economic growth attracted several buyers to last year's auction, including global private equity firms Carlyle Group, TPG Capital LP and Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group. Aabar, the largest single shareholder in Daimler AG and commodities giant Glencore International plc, surprised many by scooping up the ADCB stake at the last minute, struggling to finance the deal. Eventually, in a complex deal involving several layers of Abu Dhabi finance, Aabar's parent International Petroleum Investment Corp took out a US$1.9 billion loan from ADCB to fund the June purchase. Aabar's aggressive bid also scuppered a long-awaited consolidation in Malaysia's banking sector.
